Honke Bankyu: Peacufully Ryokan located deep inside Nikko's mountains

This Ryokan Honke Bankyu is located in the middle of Nikko’s mountains just next to a stream with the clearest water you can imagine.

We wanted to get away from the busy and noisy life in Tokyo so we decided to take a few days away to Nikko. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t really on our side, so we got to the Ryokan quite quickly which was a very nice experience.

This Ryukan is quite cheap compared to other Ryukan with same service. We went for the Hanayagi plan, which includes a Japanese style room just next to the stream. Lovely view….and sound. Then it included dinning in the evening at the indoor fireplace. Have a look at the pictures, they describe it better than I’m able to, but after finishing the whole table of food lined up for you, more dishes just kept coming.

The plan we selected was 18,000¥ per person. On top of that you can add extra food, private outdoor bath etc. The public bath in this Ryukan is also very nice and clean. There is an indoor bath and an outdoor bath just next the stream.

Anyone who likes to see beautiful views and enjoy the nature should go here. Just the tour to the Ryokan is beautiful. The Ryokan itself is very Japanese, and the staff is friendly and very service minded. This is a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

July 2013 Nikko

I got some Bamboo beer, but I am pretty sure it was nothing more than normal draft beer in a bamboo cup…anyways it was beer.

For the also included breakfast there were all kinds of Japanese and a bit western food lined up in a buffet. Nice but nothing overwhelming.

The Dinner was the highlight of the stay at Honke Bankyu. It was the experience in itself. You start by crossing the old bridge across the stream before you enter the dining hall with fireplaces prepared for each group/couple. It is very Japanese and I am sure any tourist visiting Japan would like it.

Have a look at some of the pictures from our dinner in the gallery below. I'm sorry about the quality, maybe because of the bamboo beer...
